International Arnold Schönberg Symposium at the Arnold Schönberg Center in Vienna

The Arnold Schönberg Center in Vienna is hosting an international symposium in cooperation with the Center for Research on Arnold Schönberg and the Viennese School at the Department of Musicology and Performance Studies of the University of Music and Dramatic Arts Vienna from October 17–19, 2019.
“Arnold Schönberg: Der musikalische Gedanke” (The Musical Idea) is the first volume in the series published by the International Schönberg Society (ISG) entitled “Arnold Schönberg: Sämtliche Schriften. Kritische Gesamtausgabe” (Complete Critical Edition of Arnold Schönberg’s Writings).
The Journal of the Arnold Schoenberg Center presents selected papers of the symposium held at the Arnold Schönberg Center in Vienna in October 2017 which was open to thematically unrelated submissions on Arnold Schönberg and topics related to him.
The Archive was able to acquire recently an autograph letter of Arnold Schönberg written in Vienna around 1908/09. In the letter, Schönberg refers to a concert set to take place on February 25, 1909 and organized by the Viennese “Ansorge”-Verein. The concert included Schönberg’s string sextet Verklärte Nacht op. 4 and his Second String Quartet op. 10, performed with the assistance of Marie Gutheil-Schoder and the Rosé Quartet.
Arnold Schönberg and Thomas Mann, two towering figures of twentieth-century music and literature, both found refuge in the German-exile community in Los Angeles during the Nazi era. The complete edition of their correspondence provides a glimpse inside their private and public lives and culminates in the famous dispute over Mann’s novel Doctor Faustus. Gathered here for the first time in English, the letters in this essential volume are complemented by diary entries, related articles, and other primary source materials, as well as an introduction by German studies scholar Adrian Daub that contextualizes the impact these two great artists had on twentieth-century thought and culture.
The first critically edited score of Schönberg's oratorio “Die Jakobsleiter” marks the completion of a major music editorial project within the complete edition of his works. The manuscript source for the edition is held at the Arnold Schönberg Center.
Generally speaking, the avant-garde movement known as Jung-Wien can be considered the collective nucleus of Viennese modernism, as the realms of the nerves, psyche, self, and dream were defined as their keywords in the literature. The Jung-Wien music, literature, architecture, and art scene will be examined initially from the perspective of the composer Arnold Schönberg.

The archive recently acquired an autograph letter, written by Arnold Schönberg in 1911. It will be displayed as part of the special exhibition »Arnold Schönberg & Jung-Wien«. The Adressee of this letter is Schönberg's friend from youth, the dramaturg Arthur Kahane.
Arthur Kahane studied literature and philosophy; during the Jung-Wien era he was known as the author of songs and as an actor who enjoyed connections – similarly to Schönberg – with the workers’ cultural association, and gave a talk on modern literature for the association’s lecture series.

Call for Papers
The Arnold Schönberg Center in Vienna in cooperation with the Center for Research on Arnold Schönberg and the Viennese School at the Department of Musicology and Performance Studies of the University of Music and Dramatic Arts Vienna is hosting an international symposium from October 11 to October 13, 2018.
The facsimile edition – prepared 110 years after the work was composed – unites two autograph music manuscripts of the choral work that displays “the most artful polyphony, most wonderful tonal effect, and sublimest expression” (Anton Webern).
Peace on Earth, op. 13 by Arnold Schönberg is part of the traditional choral music repertoire. The text of this a-cappella chorus, composed in 1907 for a competition organized by the Steiermärkischer Musikverein, was taken from a Christmas poem written by Conrad Ferdinand Meyer.
The Journal of the Arnold Schoenberg Center continues its annual publication rhythm with this new issue and presents selected papers of the symposium held at the Arnold Schönberg Center in Vienna in October 2016.

Das Angebot richtet sich an 12- bis 18jährige Jugendliche, die sich im Rahmen des Workshops über ihr eigenes Komponieren austauschen und wertvolle Impulse erhalten können.
The photographic collection of the Arnold Schönberg Center in Vienna
Owing to the complexity of his intellectual physiognomy, Schönberg has come to represent an epoch marked by upheaval in the artistic, political, and social spheres, lending an identity by virtue of his historical authority. His powerful image lies at the focus of this publication, with a representative selection of photographic items from Arnold Schönberg’s Estate. The pictures allow an impressive reconstruction of Schönberg’s life amid the checkered history of the 20th century and also illustrate the development of photography during a time span of 70 years.
