In 1921, the 22-year-old Hans Krása presented his String Quartet op. 2 to the public. The work testifies to the young composer’s extraordinary maturity and impresses with its original soundworld and captivating melody. Arnold Schönberg’s String Quartet No. 2 op. 10 was written more than ten years earlier; its final movement uses a text by Stefan George to evoke an “air from another planet.” A selection of early songs provides a fascinating insight into Schönberg’s evolution towards a new musical language.
