1924 • Francesco Malipiero on Schönberg

Arnold Schönberg is a creator who, in his loneliness, looks wide-eyed at harmonies. His art resembles a mighty boulder which has come loose from a mountaintop and is now slowing sliding along the slopes; it has not yet reached the bottom of the valley. Before it crashes down there, observers will not be granted the calm which follows great crashes.

The man who managed to set that colossal boulder in motion is an unadorned ascetic, but fulfilled by faith.
