Three Folk Songs op. 49 were composed in 1948, and published the following year by Edward B. Marks in New York. "Es gingen zwei Gespielen gut" had previously been arranged both as solo with piano and for mixed choir a cappella. The melodies of Opus 49 originate in the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. They are modal, that is, they do not conform with the conventions of major and minor.
