This unfinished work is evidence of Schönberg’s initial approaches to composing for larger instrumental forces. The serenade was very prevalent in Vienna at that time; Robert Fuchs (Alexander Zemlinsky’s teacher) composed five works of that type by 1895, which Schönberg must have known, if only because of their great popularity – Fuchs' Serenade in F Major op. 9 is in his library.
