“Dear Mr. Schönberg! Herr Gropius passed on your letter to my attention some days ago. This seems such an interesting assignment and I would welcome the opportunity. But the solution is not so simple.
I would like to respond to your suggestions that nickel silver should be used for the tabletops, and would urgently advise you against this. We have made similar attempts. Nickel silver tarnishes, as time passes it becomes stained, and it cannot be preserved in its original condition even with the greatest care. It is also easily scratched. We are becoming increasingly convinced that satin-finish crystal or frosted cut glass is best suited to this purpose.”
