With the transcription and indexing of Schönberg’s calendars from the years 1939 and 1940, which can now be viewed via the image archive, we receive multifaceted insights into Schönberg’s daily and weekly routines after his move to Brentwood Park.
Also documented in the calendars are his teaching at UCLA and Schönberg's concert and lecture activities in the USA. Most of the entries were made by Schönberg himself, but also – as in this case – by his wife Gertrud.
On November 12, 1940 the composer embarked on a journey to New York, where he conducted his melodrama cycle "Pierrot lunaire," op. 21 in a concert of the New Friends of Music.
The journey on the Super Chief, a train of the Athison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway, ran between Los Angeles, Kansas City, Albuquerque, Flagstaff and Chicago. Due to the celebrities from Hollywood who were often carried in the Super Chief, the luxury train was given the nickname "Train of the Stars."
