Walter Kaufmann had an eventful life. Born in Karlsbad, he studied Indian music in Bombay after the Nazi seizure of power in Germany. He then settled in London and Canada, until he was appointed Professor of Ethnology in the USA in 1957. His 11th String Quartet creates a breathtaking fusion of Western and Eastern traditions. Arnold Schönberg’s String Quartet, No. 4, which combines the twelve-tone method with traditional classical forms, provides a contrasting approach. The concert also includes a work by Modesta Bor, which combines the music of her native Venezuela with contemporary compositional techniques, as well as Samuel Barber’s Opus 11, whose poignant slow movement became famous in its orchestral version.

The concert will be streamed live on facebook and YouTube and will be available for seven days afterwards.
