Alongside Arnold Schönberg, Charles Ives is also celebrating his 150th birthday this year. Schönberg admired Ives’ compositions, and described him as a “great man.” As a representative of a specifically American modernism, Ives had a lasting influence on the music of the United States. The selected songs from his collection “114 Songs” demonstrate the great diversity of his work. Schönberg and Poulenc met in Mödling in 1922. The cycle “Banalités” is exemplary for the memorable melodies of the French composer, whose style remains unique in the 20th century.
