Together with Anton Webern and Alban Berg, Heinrich Jalowetz was one of Schönberg’s earliest and closest pupils. For four decades, from 1906 to 1946, Schönberg and Jalowetz maintained an intensive correspondence. The correspondence, comprising almost 340 letters, offers fascinating insights into the work of the composer Schönberg and the opera conductor Jalowetz, as well as private and political matters. It is an exchange in many registers: deep affection stands alongside disgruntlement, factual information alongside genuine cordiality.
