Arnold SCHÖNBERG Verklärte Nacht op. 4

Arnold Schönberg was not yet thirty when an ensemble of six string players from the Wiener Philharmoniker premiered his “Verklärte Nacht” [Transfigured Night], op. 4, at the Musikverein. Leading the group was the legendary Arnold Rosé – this concert is dedicated to the memory of the 80th anniversary of his death. Schönberg’s slightly younger contemporary Ernst von Dohnányi began work on his String Sextet at the age of sixteen, revising it several times before its premiere in 1898. This rarely performed early work is a rewarding rediscovery and will be complemented on this special concert by Hugo Wolf’s cheerful Italian Serenade.
