In Schönberg’s late works, traditional forms based on motifs and themes gradually dissolve – instead, the music develops through gestures, energies, and timbral characteristics, as if the structure arose within the sound itself. Mia Zabelka takes up this approach in her music for Schönberg’s “Phantasy” and plays with physical, psychological, and sensory impulses in dialogue with electronics. Karlheinz Essl and Erwin Uhrmann use Schönberg’s orchestral piece “Farben” [Colors] as the starting point for a free improvisation with synthesizer and voice – part of their Coastlines Sessions, which have been running for several years – venturing into new sonic worlds in dialogue with the composer’s visual art.
