In 1907, Schönberg placed a newspaper advertisement seeking “vocally gifted and musically trained ladies and gentlemen” to form a mixed choir. Addressed to “professional musicians and amateurs,” he planned to develop a varied repertoire for his singers. The choir performed only two concerts – its debut featured works by Haydn and Mendelssohn that we will also be able to hear at this year’s traditional Open House. The concert commemorates Schönberg’s ambitious project and concludes with his monumental work “Friede auf Erden” [Peace on Earth].
