Intermittently through their careers, Schönberg and Webern turned to images of China in varying ways. They followed Mahler’s lead in setting texts adapted from the Chinese, and at times their efforts conformed to the broad contours of Viennese orientalism. However, at other times they challenged these narratives, revealing the influence of Karl Kraus and August Strindberg and providing a lens for examining particularly modern issues of identity and assimilation and questions about the nature of artistic invention.
