Probably in 1894, Josef Labor, known as a strict critic, was played the first string quartet by a certain Arnold Schönberg. The organist, blind since childhood, listened thoughtfully and at the end quietly said to the young composer, “You must become a musician.” Widely appreciated at the time, Labor’s works are rarely on concert programs today. The Cello Sonata and Trio have been rediscovered by the Ensemble TRIS and recorded on CD. They were written for Labor’s student, the famous pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who continued his career with works for the left hand after a serious war injury.
