»Durchaus rhapsodisch« – so beginnt eine Fragment gebliebene Cellosonate des jungen Theodor Wiesengrund; eine Vortragsanweisung, die ebenso auch das Formprinzip des später unter dem Namen Adorno weithin bekannt gewordenen Philosophen umreißen könnte. Im Zentrum des Buches steht der eher fremd gebliebene Musiker und Komponist, der 1925 bei Alban Berg und Eduard Steuermann in Wien studierte und bis ins Jahr 1946 eine Reihe von Werken schuf, die sich mit Adornos Namen noch kaum verbinden: Liederzyklen und Kammermusik, Klavierstücke, ein Opernlibretto und Orchesterwerke.

“Thoroughly rhapsodic” – this is the expression marking assigned by the young Theodor Wiesengrund to the beginning of his cello sonata that was to remain a fragment; it is a marking that could also define the formative principle of the philosopher who would later become widely known by the name of Adorno. This book focuses on the musician and composer who remained largely remote and who studied in Vienna with Alban Berg and Eduard Steuermann in 1925, creating a series of works up until the year 1946 that can hardly be linked with Adorno’s name: song cycles and chamber music, piano pieces, an opera libretto, and orchestral works.
