Object #48 / Marie Pappenheim to Arnold Schönberg

Letter accompanying the libretto “Expectation” [Erwartung]
Summer 1909

Arnold Schönberg Center, Wien

“Dear Mr. Schönberg, I do not have a large envelope today, and so I had to tear it out. Very difficult to read, isn’t it? I would be better dictating it instead.”

Within three weeks Marie Pappenheim (Frischauf) composed the text to the monodrama “Erwartung.” “I wrote lying in the grass, with pencil, on large sheets of paper, had no copy, scarcely read through what I had written.”
